A 31-year-old woman escaped the pits of abysmal superstition, when she realised her family wanted to kill her as a 'sacrifice' to unearth treasure hidden. She sought police protection after lodging a complaint against her parents, brother and a tantrik in Satana, Nashik two days ago.

Nandini Omkar Damre was staying with her parents Omkar and Malanbai and brother Rahul in Sukadmal village, after two failed marriages. In her complaint to Satana police, she alleged that her family with the help of four tantriks was trying to find hidden treasure worth Rs8 crore in their home. One of the tantriks, Bandu Jagtap, 45, a resident of Golwad village, had told the Damre family that if they performed a ritual as stated by him they'd be able to find the treasure hidden beneath the sanctum sanctorum in their house.

According to Nandini, her parents, brother and four tantriks began the rituals in the house on December 19 and, four times a week, dug out mud from a corner of the house, and placed two live tortoises there along with a metal idol. They sprinkled rice grains and blood on the idol, Nandini said in her complaint.

She said that when she objected to the activity, she was beaten up by her family and the tantriks, who asked the parents to kill her in a 'human sacrifice' to obtain the treasure. Nandini said she was harassed and made to sit in a circle drawn in the corner where rituals were performed on her. Last week, she managed to escape the clutches of her family and stayed with her relatives. On Sunday, she approached the police and filed a case against her family and the four tantriks.

Omkar, Malanbai and Rahul Damre and two of the tantriks have been arrested, informed Satana cops. A case has been filed against them under the Prevention of Superstition and Black Magic Act.
