The family of deceased Jitender Singh Khalsa, who mysteriously died in Doha, on Monday informed the high court that they were willing to receive his body but request the permission to conduct a second post-mortem in India, to ascertain the exact cause of death as they suspect foul play.

Advocate Gunaratne Sadavarte, arguing the petition filed by the deceased's brother Dilip Singh Khalsa, said that the reports presented by the two doctors, who had examined Khalsa had given different opinions and moreover, the reports show that his ribs were damaged. Then how can his death be termed as natural death?

A division bench of Justices NH Patil and Anuja Prabhudessai, while keeping all contentions open directed the family to file an application seeking a second post-mortem to be conducted in India, after the body is received and adjourned the hearing till June.

The family had earlier refused to claim the body and sought a list of documents such as CCTV footage, passport, Visa, post-mortem report, copy of FIR, if any filed from the consulate or the employee agent.

According to the petition, Khalsa (38), had gone to Qatar in September 2013, after being employed as a clerk with JM Mehta and Company and Qatar Engineering and Constructions, the companies deal with procurement of oil, gas and petroleum.

On November 26, 2013, Khalsa's family was informed that he had died of a cardiac arrest. The family was told that they would have to sign and a No Objection Certificate after which Khalsa's body would be sent to India.

Alleging foul play behind Khalsa's death, the petition had sought an independent inquiry by the concerned Indian authorities. In addition to the inquiry into Khalsa's death, the family has sought a compensation of Rs70 lakh from the company Khalsa was employed in.
