The Nagpada police on Friday arrested five of a family for allegedly setting a newly married 23-year-old woman ablaze.

The victim, who has been identified as Ashia Shaikh, sustained 55 per cent burns and is currently undergoing treatment at Masina Hospital in Byculla.

Those arrested have been identified as the victim's husband Imran (33), his sister Zeenat (35), his sister-in-law Husnah (30), his father, Dawood (55) and brother-in-law Athi-ur-Rehman (33). Ashia has been living with Imran and in-laws in Kailash Apartment in Nagpada.

According to the police, Ashia and Imran got married in February 2013. A few months after their marriage, Ashia found out that Imran was allegedly having an affair with another woman. He even asked Ashia for permission to marry his girlfriend. However, when the victim did not give consent, Imran and her in-laws allegedly started torturing her physically and mentally. The victim told the police that Imran assaulted her with a belt following an argument during Ramzan last year. However, she had not mention the incident to anyone.

On Friday, when the incident occurred, Imran was not at home. Zeenat got into an argument with Ashia which soon caused the family to rise up in arms against her and they allegedly poured kerosene on her and struck the match. Engulfed in flames, Ashia screamed for help following which neighbours rushed to her rescue. They doused the fire and rushed her to the hospital.

Following Ashia's statement, the five were arrested and have been booked for attempting murder. They are currently in police custody.
