The family of Chandrakant Bobhate, 40, who died after falling into the gap while trying to board a local train at platform no.1 in Ghatkopar railway station, is in the process of approaching the Railway Claims Tribunal.

Bobhate was on his way to his house in Dombivli after work when he met with the accident at 12.30am on Monday, and died. According to eyewitnesses, portion of the asphalt on the platform had come off and it was due to this that Bobhate had lost his balance and fallen into the gap.

He is survived by his mother, wife and children, who are still in school. Bobhate was the only earning member in the family. He was working as a loader at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Internaitonal Airport and was on contract.

On Sunday, around 11.30pm, he left his office and went to Ghatkopar station where he met a relative, who was returning from Lalbaug. The two decided to board a second-class compartment to Dombivli.

Another relative of his said: "The train was overcrowded and he was trying to get inside, but as there were a lot of people already inside, he was finding it difficult board. He, however, managed to grab the rod but lost his grip. His relative who was with him, managed to get inside, and did not notice what had happened to Bobhate."

There are no CCTVs at the spot where the incident occurred. Railway officials said: "Our inquiries have revealed that Bobhate was trying to board a running train. CCTVs only show RPF personnel rushing towards the spot of the accident. Bobhate's severely injured body was found near the tracks and was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead."
