The ill-fated mini bus which met with an accident approximately 160 kms from Mumbai on NH8 had three young couples in it. Two smaller vehicles were in tow with other family members, all of whom were going back to Surat after dropping off their grandfather, who was going to the USA, at Mumbai airport.

All passengers were residents of Sithan and Olpat in Surat. Tushar Patel (32), wife Amita (30) were travelling with their son Dhway, and were all fast asleep in the right corner of the vehicle.

Newly married couple Dhawal (25) and Bhumika Patel were on the trio's opposite side. Denis Patel (30) and wife Reema were also on the left end, and, since the impact of the accident was more on that side, the four were killed instantly. 18-year-old Bhoomi Patel sustained severe injuries due to broken glass on her body, and succumbed to blood loss.

An officer with Talsari police said: "Relatives back home were informed that the group would reach early on Monday morning. Since they belonged to a family of traders, most of them had to attend to business in Surat the following day."

Belongings stolen, chocolates remain

After hiring the mini bus, the 10-member group were returning to their hometown with packages containing chocolates for the children back home. While wallets and large contents of the luggage went missing later on Monday morning, the sweets remained untouched.

Jayesh Patel, a relative who claimed the bodies from the Talasari Primary Health Center, said: "We are yet to recover all the valuables from the bus because many of them are missing. My family had brought chocolates for kids at home, and the littlest one, Jiya Patel (5) loved to eat candies."

An officer with Talasari police said: "If we receive a formal complaint of theft, only then will we register a case. For now, no relative has come forward to claim so."
