Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) is known to take action against doctors if they are found guilty. Now, MMC is taking a serious initiative for doctors whose death is declared as accidental. Council has decided to provide Rs 3 lakh to families of these doctors so that they get immediate relief. In accidental death cases, council finds most of the time, families gets delayed help that too at a time when the family is desperate for monetary help.

MMC is a statutory body that has the power to suspend a doctor's licence if she/he is found guilty of malpractice. The body also maintains that the registration if an allopath is registered in the state, she/he cannot practice without registration in another state. There are almost 80,000 doctors registered with the council across the state.

"We have observed that yearly 9-10 doctors registered with us suffer accidental death. Also, we had seen many of these doctors' families not getting immediate relief and they depend upon others. If doctors violate rules we punish them. At the same time we should help them when they need it." said Dr Shivkumar Utture, senior surgeon and member of MMC.

"Apart from this, we have also decided award to those doctors excelling in their respective fields. This compensation money will be given from our corpus fund. We get the money through the doctor's registration and medical conference recognition and we use this money for doctors welfare," he added.

Council also appealed to the different organisations to contribute money to this cause.

Dr Anil Pachnekar, ex-president, Indian Medical Council, (Maharashtra) said, "This is a good initiative by the council. We welcome this move and there are doctors' families not in the city but also rural areas who need monetary help.
