Enjoyed drinking post-work but not sure if you're violating the permissible alcohol limit to drive? The waterhole you frequent is now likely to have an Alco Booth that will assist you in finding the level of alcohol in your blood.

On Tuesday, as part of the Road Safety Week 2016, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis launched Alco Booth, a device that will be installed in pubs, bars and similar outlets where alcohol is served.

The device is being provided by a private firm but supported by the state government and particularly the Mumbai traffic police. While leaving, all one has to do is blow air with the help of straw into the device. If the device gives a green thumps up that means you are in your limits, else look for an alternative to reach your destination.

Contact details of various transport operators, like taxi aggregators and autorickshaws, will be put up on the device for immediate assistance.

"Some bars and restaurants have agreed to purchase the device," said Milind Bharambe, joint commissioner of police (traffic).

Each booth is priced between Rs50,000 and Rs60,000 and pub or bar owners will have to invest to procure the device. The aim is to reduce drink-driving cases that endanger the life of not only the motorist, but also of pedestrians and other motorists.

As part of the intensive drive against errant motorists since January 6 till Monday (January 11), a total of 1,126 driving licences have been suspended for a period of 90 days. The violations include signal jumping, driving while talking on mobile phone, and others.
