The freedom and anonymity offered by the internet and social media notwithstanding, they are causing irreparable harm to marriages. Concerned at the growing trend, the Masina Hospital has organised a workshop to help people manage bumpy rides triggered by the digital world.
The programme, titled 'Secrets of a happy married life', will see experts throwing light on issues such as effect of digital media on family, parenting skills, bedroom secrets to a happily married life, said psychiatrist Dr Yusuf Matcheswalla. It will be conducted on Republic Day (Monday).
"Apart from Masina, I also work with Sir JJ group of hospitals where we come across scores of cases referred to us by courts for opinion. Some of the common causes of marital discord include inability to resolve conflicts, getting lost on each one's role, different priorities, etc.," said Dr Matcheswalla. Proper counselling was proving to be effective, he added.
Gone are the days when families would have dinner together and discuss the day, said Dr Avinash D'souza, a psychiatrist from Santa Cruz. "Nowadays, the husband and wife are so busy in their own world that they talk only on mobile phones. They have completely lost of the personal touch. Kids too adopt this lifestyle. The result in irrevocable breakdown in relationships."
