Toll on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has been extended till November 2023. It was scheduled to get over in August 2019. The reason behind the extension is additional construction work which will be undertaken on the Expressway as well as the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway.

Out of the six companies that had come forward for the works, IRB Infrastructure bagged the job. IRB Infrastructure is currently the toll collection agency on the 95km-long Expressway.

"Widening of roads, construction of bridges, underpass, vehicular subway, operation

and maintenance of the Expressway, etc. are part of the work for the project, wherein the toll-collection concession duration is 4 years 3 months and 22 days," informed an official from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC).

As per the final contract, a total expenditure of Rs1,687 crore is involved, including upfront payment of Rs1,000 crore to the MSRDC.

The current toll collection on the Expressway was to end on August 8, 2019, but IRBInfrastructure will continue with it into the next decade as it is supposed to operate and maintain the road connecting the two cities.

Even the toll plazas will be widened from the present 8-lane to 12-lane in order to reduce the overall waiting time of the vehicles. The congestion on the Expressway has forced MSRDC to plan for its capacity augmentation; however, the same proposal has been stuck due to political fight between Congress and NCP-headed MSRDC.
