Going by the protests against the implementation of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) this year, with state board students citing lack of preparedness owing to the time, academicians have predicted a rise in science stream merit list cut-offs. Their reasoning is that those who will not be able to clear NEET for admission into medical or dental courses will opt for science.

Chairman of Association of Non-Government Colleges (ANGC), Mumbai, Tukaram Shiware said, "Looking at the recent scenario and state board students opposing NEET, I feel that these students may rush for admission in science stream. And this may lead to a rise in the cut-offs."

Many parents in different regions of Maharashtra recently protested against the Supreme Court's decision to scrap state-level Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission in medical and dental courses and consider NEET scores for the same.

According to academicians, if students don't get admission in medical courses based on their CET scores, they may either take a drop to prepare for NEET next year or they may rush to take admission in science stream.

A teacher from a college in the western suburbs said, "The students who are firm on pursuing medicine will take a break for a year to prepare for the entrance test. NEET will definitely benefit central board students, but those from the state board may have a tough time this year if the decision does not come in their favour. While these students may opt for science, it's also possible that they will leave the course the next year if they clear NEET."
