Even as Sassoon Hospital and State Forensic Laboratory continue to pass the buck over goof-ups on the DNA tests of Symbiosis student, an independent expert has debunked the theory that she died due to overconsumption of alcohol. Sanam Hasan, 19, a second year fashion design student of Pune’s Symbiosis College, died after her birthday party on October 2 last year. She was an Andheri resident.

“It is unlikely that Sanam died of overconsumption of alcohol if the alcohol found in her viscera was 133mg per 100ml and in her blood was 106mg per 100ml. This amount of alcohol cannot kill someone though it is adequate to send the person in a coma,” said Dr Harish Pathak, head of forensic medicine department of KEM Hospital and Seth GS Medical College.

As per the report submitted by assistant chemical analyst BD Dhongade from the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory 133mg of ethyl alcohol was traced per 100gm of Sanam’s stomach viscera while 106mg of ethyl alcohol was found per 100gm of her liver viscera. The report said there was 85mg of ethyl alcohol per 100ml of Sanam’s blood sample. Sassoon Hospital concluded that Sanam’s death occurred due to “alcoholic intoxication with ischemic heart disease”.

Dr Pathak said, “Sanam was unconscious and later died. Some adulterated substances might have been added in the alcohol due to which she may  have died.”

On January 23, a fresh complaint was filed against Sanam’s friend Mohnish Bolate, 23.

He was arrested. Sanam had vodka and whisky at the party and started vomiting. Instead of taking her to hospital, Mohnish gave her lemon juice. She was taken to Ruby Hall Clinic where she died on the same day.

More goof-ups
It seems that even the sample of vaginal smear of Sanam Hasan was tampered with. According to the report filed by forensic experts, the DNA extracted from the swab did not match with the dna of Sanam Hasan’s parents. The forensic report mentioned that traces of semen were found in the swab sample sent to the laboratory but the DNA extracted from the semen did not match with that of Sanam’s friend Mohnish Bolate. This came to light when dna obtained the report of DNA tests carried out in the case.
