Parrikar informed that 15.84 acre of land would be provided for the same.
The long pending expansion works of the Pune airport would now be possible since the Indian Air Force (IAF) would be giving away 15.84 acre of its land to the airports authority of India (AAI). The decision arrived during a meeting chaired by defence minister Manohar Parrikar on Sunday.
The guardian minister for Pune district Girish Bapat who is also the food and civil supplies minister for the state, minister of state for social justice Dilip Kamble, Pune Lok Sabha MP Anil Shirole, local MLAs Jagdish Mulik and Yogesh Tilekar were present for the meeting. The officials from IAF, AAI and Pune Municipal Corporation commissioner Kunal Kumar were also present for the meeting.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Parrikar informed that 15.84 acre of land would be provided for the proposed expansion work of the Pune airport and this land would be given on lease. The minister said that the legal process for the lease would be completed soon. Parrikar, however, made it clear that even though the legal process of the lease would be done the expansion work would start immediately.
Parrikar informed that there has been increase in number of passengers at Pune airport and this rise is almost 30 to 35 per cent in last two years. He informed that the said 15.84 acre of land is being provided for the expansion of the existing airport and the proposed expansion would be adequate to take care of 30 to 40 per cent rise in number of passengers at the airport. He expressed the need for second phase of expansion for the airport. He informed that the road widening which is required to prevent the traffic jams on the roads leading to city from airport is also approved in the meeting. He informed that all the concerned authorities have been instructed accordingly in the meeting.
