Ex-students of Dombivli's Pragati College came together on Sunday to explain the importance of casting vote, to first-time voters. They started with their own school, gathered around 250 students and explained about the need to know the right candidate.

"Around 65% people casting their votes this year are youth, but most of them consider it to be a holiday and relax at home or have a trip planned. Hardly few understand the importance of the fundamental right to vote and come forward to cast their votes. Hence, we decided to take up the issue and make the students understand about the change their vote could bring," said Vishwanath Biwalkar, one of the ex-students.

"We usually have our monthly meetings in the school premises and during one such meeting we came up with this idea. While discussing it further, we realised it is not only youth from our college but many others who should also realise it. Hence, we decided to spread the message and have now contacted various colleges, youth forums and associations," added Nilesh Dole, another member of the ex- students association.

During this hour-long session the ex-students also cleared the doubts of other students. The ex-students created awareness about the right to vote and also explained ways to chose the right candidate for their constituency.

"Only saying that today's youth are the future of the nation isn't enough. They should first learn to exercise their basic right, which is to vote. As this was an initiative by the ex-students of our school, we wanted them to start this awareness campaign from our college and then move on to other places," said Ashok Mahajan, principal, Pragati College.

"We are in talks with various institutes and associations so that we can spread the message and spread awareness. For now, we are restricting ourselves to Dombivli but if any one wants us to do the same in their society or institute then we will be glad to do the same for them," said Leena Nabar, another member from the ex-students association.
