In an audacious attack, one person was fired upon four rounds in a busy Nehru Nagar area of Kurla on Friday evening. The police suspect that the firing was a fallout from a previous enmity.

According to the police, the incident happened around 3.30pm near an open compound, owned by former MLA Milind Kamble, near Kurla service road.

On Friday, Kamble and his driver Mangesh Waghmare (38) arrived at the site in the former's Toyota Fortuner. Soon, Waghmare had an argument with the site supervisor, Anil Bhise (50), a resident of Kurla, and fired upon him five times. Four bullets hit Bhise in the abdomen and thighs, and left him critically injured.

After the firing, Waghmare fled from the spot with the revolver. Locals later helped Kamble to rush Bhise to Rajawadi hospital. In view of his condition, Bhise was later shifted to Sion hospital.

"Bhise's condition is said to be stable and once he is medically fit, we shall make inquiries. We are also investigating from where Waghmare sourced the weapon," said additional commissioner of police (central region) RD Shinde.

A few hours after the incident, a crime branch unit-VI team nabbed Waghmare and seized from him the weapon used in the crime. The accused was about to flee from the state when he was caught.

"We believe that Waghmare and Bhise were not on good terms since long. When Waghmare saw Bhise at the site, he probably got enraged and fired upon him. The compound has seven CCTV cameras and the recording is been analysed," said deputy commissioner of police, zone-VI, Shahaji Umap.

Other than Kamble, the only eyewitness to the incident is a boy who was then playing in the compound. Speaking to dna, the boy said, "When the two (Kamble and Waghmare) came inside the compound in an SUV, I was playing alone. Later, I saw the driver of the SUV (Waghmare) taking out a revolver and shooting at Bhise. After firing five rounds, he fled through an open exit."

The police are questioning Kamble and a forensic team has collected blood samples from the spot for further investigation.
