Maharashtra government on Monday, appointed a one-member committee headed by retired judge Kishor Rohi, to inquire into a 24 acre land deal in Navi Mumbai. The opposition, in the monsoon session held in July, had alleged that state's urban development department, which is headed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, helped private builder for allotment of 24 acre worth Rs 1,768 crore to a private builder that had been allotted to farmers displaced by the Koyna power project.

The probe will also look into 200 similar deals by the previous Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) government for the period 1999 and 2014. The committee is expected to submit its report in three months. The government today issued notification in this regard.

Fadnavis had refuted opposition charges and announced a judicial probe in the matter. He had also ordered a stay on all transactions pertaining to said land and instructed the revenue department to ensure no part of the 24-acre plot allotted to farmers affected by the Koyna power project was sold or transferred.

An officer from the state urban development department told DNA,'' The committee will probe ownership of land involving state government or City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). Its mandate includes whether the Raigad district collector has a jurisdiction for the allotment of land to project affected people under the stipulated norms and laws and after the allotment of land whether handing over is permissible.'' Besides, the committee will also inquire into allotment of deals especially during Congress-NCP government and whether the land was allotted and handed over to PAPs.

However, Mumbai Regional Congress Committee president Sanjay Nirupam, who was at the forefront to level charges against the government, said CM should have scrapped the land deal and later institute judicial probe. ''I had demanded such an inquiry by a sitting judge. Although a retired judge to head the probe, we expect it should be fair and transparent. The officers from the concerned departments and CIDCO should not be spared but be thoroughly porobed and action be initiated against them,'' he added.
