The Local Crime Branch (LCB) of the Vasai police on Friday named former encounter specialist Sachin Vaze as a wanted accused in an alleged extortion racket being investigated by it. The police have, meanwhile, seized a pistol and three live cartridges from the residence of doctor Anil Yadav, who allegedly ran the extortion racket in cahoots with politicians and former policemen.
DNA had reported how Assistant Police Inspector Prashant Langi of the LCB had claimed in court that his ‘reward’ for probing the case was a transfer order to the police control room. Following the DNA report, Langi received a letter from the Inspector General of Konkan Range, Prashant Burde, stating that his transfer stood cancelled.
On Monday, Yadav was produced before the Vasai sessions court and his police custody was extended up to 30 April. In the remand copy, which is with DNA, investigation officer Langi stated that former Mumbai Police officer Sachin Vaze was a wanted accused in the case. On April 4, Vaze allegedly provided a car to the accused at Vapi in Gujarat and also provided him help to stay away from the clutches of the police.
“We have substantial evidence against Sachin Vaze’s involvement in the extortion racket, and so we have named him as a wanted accused in the case. Yadav’s victims, against whom he filed Right to Information queries and later extorted lakhs of rupees from them, have also come forward,” said a senior LCB officer.
Langi claimed in court that Yadav, upon reaching Vapi, met Vaze. On Vaze’s instructions, he destroyed his mobile phone by setting it on fire. The police took Yadav to the location where the phone was set on fire and his claims were allegedly verified.
When contacted, Vaze said, “I am unaware about the case which has been registered against me. I know Dr Anil Yadav for many years, but I am not involved in any kind of extortion racket.”
