A day after Dr Umesh Pai, retired deputy dean of civic-run Sion hospital, was found dead in Parel near his rented home, members of his housing society said he fell from fifth floor. Pai (60) had shifted to Mahalakshmi SRA Co-operative Housing Society a few months ago. He resided on the fifth floor with his wife. The couple has no children.

Dr Pai was suffering from manic depressive psychosis – commonly known as bipolar disorder – since long years and was under psychiatric treatment. It is a form of mood disorder, in which the patient suffers from manic or hypomanic episodes, where there are changes in mood of the person accompanied by high energy states. On Tuesday, before his death, he had visited Dr Shubhangi Parkar, head of psychiatric department at BMC-run KEM Hospital for counselling.

Later, Dr Pai was found lying in a pool of blood on the ground inside the building.

While the police have ruled out foul play, sources said, it would difficult to ascertain if the doctor committed suicide or it was an accident. They have registered a case of accidental death and said that the way he died was abnormal.

Ashok Dudhe, deputy commissioner of police (zone IV), said, "The death occurred in the morning. After we got a call from a neighbour, our men reached the spot. Dr Pai's residence was locked from the inside. He had fallen off the balcony."

Sources said that some of Dr Pai's dues were yet to be released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. "He had given up the possession of his official residence a little late, due to which certain dues were not released," said a senior doctor.

"He was very intelligent and honest to the core," said Dr Suleman Merchant, dean of Sion hospital. While the housing society has balcony with very low parapets, they don't have grilles. "After this incident, we have realised that grilles need to be fixed in the society," said a resident.
