Of nine divisional boards in the state, Mumbai division has the largest number of schools, but it is the Konkan division which has topped the state in terms of academic excellence. Every second school in the division (which comprises Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri districts) has attained 100% results in the 2015 SSC board exams, which is a record.

In comparison, one in three schools in Pune and Kolhapur divisions have attained 100% results. Mumbai division comes in at fourth place with only one in four schools (968 out of 3,517 schools) having achieved that, say the statistics provided by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Schools.

This is despite the fact that the Mumbai division has the largest number of schools in the state, with a higher share of private schools. Mumbai division includes Mumbai city, suburbs, Thane, Raigad and newly created Palghar district.

Only 10-11% of schools in Latur, Amravati and Nagpur divisions got 100% results, which is much lower than the state's average. Across Maharashtra, over 4,700 schools out of 21,000 (22%) have obtained cent percent results.

A school teacher said, "Pune is always known for quality education. But the score card of the division as a whole, which also consists of Solapur and Ahmadnagar districts, is quite encouraging. On the other hand, Mumbai division results are affected by poor quality schools, both government and private."

The Mumbai division board officials, though, defended the results. Laxmikant Pande, Chairman of the Mumbai division board claimed, "The results of our division are improving every year. Moreover, the number of private and repeater candidates, which is the largest in our division, brings down the overall pass percentage of the schools."
