Eve-teased, Boisar girl sets herself ablaze, dies in Sion hospital

A 15-year-old Boisar girl, who set herself ablaze in May after she was allegedly eve-teased by four people, died at Sion hospital due to severe burn injuries.

On May 31, the girl, a Std X student, after allegedly being eve-teased on her way back home from school, poured kerosene on herself and set herself on fire.

Her parents, who were outside the house, broke the door open and rushed in when they saw the flames. By then, the girl had already sustained 70% burn injuries on her body.

The Boisar MIDC police had arrested four youngsters — Akshay Raut, 18, Abhijit More, 17, Deepen More, 15, and Pranit Thakur, 19 — for abetment to suicide, but they had been released on bail.

“The minor girl was given treatment at a rural hospital in Boisar and was later shifted to Sion hospital as the burns were very severe. She died during treatment. We will now seek permission from the Palghar court to cancel the teenagers’ bail and press additional charges against them,” said Rajesh Gawli, assistant inspector, Boisar MIDC police station.
