There's no better way to escape the dreary, rain-sodden streets of Mumbai than by popping into your favourite restaurant for a stellar meal. This weekend, there's even more of a draw with some of SoBo's best restaurants offering European cuisine for the European Union Restaurant Week (September 6-12), as part of the Tastes of Europe initiative.

The European Union has partnered with a few top-notch establishments; among them are Salt Water Café in Churchgate, Indigo in Colaba and Vetro at the Oberoi in Nariman Point. These restaurants will offer a prix-fixe menu of their European food, at a fraction of their usual prices—a pretty good deal for anyone looking to expand their culinary horizons.

The menus revisit dishes plucked from across Europe, using traditional European ingredients and techniques such as smoking and grilling—"European food with a light Asian influence using European ingredients and food products," according to Executive Chef Nitin Kulkarni of Indigo. For instance, smoked artichoke hearts are served with savoury parmesan crème brûlée and pulled duck and chestnut ravioli is served with French perigord sauce at Indigo. According to Kulkarni, the former is one of Indigo's most-ordered items. "There is definitely an increase in the demand for authentic European cuisine by the well-travelled, discerning Indian customer," he says.

From September 15-21, shoppers trawling Foodhall in Palladium will be greeted by an EU food kiosk, a repository of authentic European food products such as dairy, meat and herbs. Olive oil tastings and food demos will be par for the course. The idea being "to highlight the diversity and quality of agricultural goods produced in the European Union," says H.E. Dr João Cravinho, Ambassador of the European Union. Ladies and gentlemen, it is time to prep your stomachs.
