The Education and Training Centre (ETC) in Vashi has been commemorating the disability week through various events and collaborations. Amongst all these activities, they have also decided to increase their training facilities by including sign language as a part of their curriculum. This will be beneficial for students to communicate on a global platform as well.

"We want the children at the ETC to be empowered and our training is a process, that will enable them to live with dignity and also ensure their integration into mainstream schools through various physical therapy measures.

These children should feel equal and at par with other students as well. We are a centre for children across all age groups, with all kinds of disabilities, we wish to provide all services under one roof. As part of this, we will be starting the sign language programme," said Varsha Bhagat, director of ETC.

With more than 70 deaf and dumb students taking training at the ETC, this move would be beneficial. "Students should be able to achieve complete development and we will ensure that they are ready to mingle with others as well. For this, learning a sign language is essential. Through this, they can communicate with others. If equipped with sign language at a young age, they will be able to grasp on several links easily. It will be a year long programme, wherein they will be given proper training to communicate fluently. We are also planning to include family members in this training but, we are yet to see how to work it out. We will empower them and make them ready to face the competitive world," said Bhagat.

"There are many corporate establishments that hire those who can communicate with sign language as well, as a part of their CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) programme. Hence, this will be a very helpful option, as they can easily get jobs and be able to support themselves," said Radhika Mhatre, a relative of a ward at the ETC. Presently, children are enjoying various events that are hosted as a part of World Disability Day celebration.
