Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative Afzal Usmani has told the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) that his escape from the court premises wasn’t planned.

Sources said Usmani told the police that he escaped from the court premises after he was left alone by the escort cops on the third floor. Usmani said he didn’t contact any IM member while on the run. However, the ATS is verifying the claims made by him.

“During interrogation Usmani told us that he didn’t plan the escape and just took advantage of the opportunity. We are also trying to gather evidence from the places he stayed in while on the run,” said an ATS officer, requesting anonymity.

The sources claimed that Usmani kept on changing his hideouts and desperately wanted to flee India as he feared that the police will kill him in an encounter.

“In 2008, when Usmani was arrested from the Azamgarh railway station, he had pleaded the crime branch officers not to shoot him. This time, however, he was sure that he would not be spared if caught and hence he planned to settle down in Nepal,” the officer said.
