Wages of corruption! Mhada vice president (VP) Satish Gavai has ordered the transfer of the entire staff in its marketing department. Even Aparna Somani, director, marketing, has been transferred back to her parent department.

There were numerous complaints of corruption against the staff in the marketing department. But common people were afraid to speak out as they feared their allotment of flat would be cancelled.

Sources in the know of things said the VP had also ordered an internal investigation to find out the depth of corruption and harassment in the department.

A highly placed source revealed: "There is a rampant corruption in the marketing department, which is completely dominated by touts. This forced the VP's hand.

Dilip Halde, secretary, MHADA, said: "Yes, transfers in the marketing department are in the process. We have even relieved Aparna Somani from the post of director, marketing with immediate effect and repatriated her to her parent department of revenue.

"There were numerous complaints of corruption and harassment (of common people) against the director of marketing. She was not directly involved. The job of collecting money and other dealings on her behalf were carried out by other officers in the department. It was on the basis of her confidential report (CR), which was completely negative, that she immediately removed from the post," a source revealed.

Satish Gavai, VP, Mhada, said: "Staffers in the marketing department are being transferred. The process would be completed soon."

"Aparna Somani was a sales tax inspector and later became Tahsildar. She is from the Marathwada division originally, but switched to Konkan division later as deputy collector. She came on deputation to Mhada from the revenue department. She is known to be one of the most corrupt officers in the revenue circle. She had godfathers in the bureaucracy as well as in the former government. Despite numerous wrong doings, she was protected by politicians top bureaucrats."

Some time back, ACB had trapped Riddhi Sawant, one of the staff members in Mhada marketing department on the complaint of a mill worker. In her statement to ACB, she revealed the names of many officers. After this, one of the deputy directors of marketing, CJ Rao, was transferred out. However, Riddhi Sawant reported back for duty the very next day. It's said she is related to one of the senior bureaucrats and it was due to this that no action had been taken against her.

One of the senior Mhada officers said: "The main motive of officials who come to Mhada from other departments is to make money. Even our top officials try to protect them. The utmost action against them is repatriating them to their parent departments, where everything is forgotten. We have officers in Mhada at all levels who can be, as per rules, promoted and posted in place of those who come from outside. We are being deprived of our legitimate right to be promoted."
