Admitting that last year's tall claims made by the party went down the drain as the city witnessed flooding just two days later, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray said that this year the civic machinery should be on its toes to ensure that citizens are not made to go through the trouble of water-logging. He also appealed to citizens to act responsibly by not throwing garbage in drains. Thackeray was speaking while inaugurating the Britannia pumping station on Wednesday.

"Last year, while inaugurating the Love Grove pumping station in Worli, the party had claimed that citizens won't have to go through hardship, ie face flooding. However, just two days later, the city was flooded after two-three days of heavy rains. So this year, I expect the civic body to work more efficiently," he said.

Thackeray said that three years ago the Irla pumping station worked well the first year but failed the second year due to garbage stuck in the screens. "While nature showers rain, people shower garbage in the drains, which obstructs the flow of water and chokes the gutters, causing flooding. I will appeal to citizens to avoid throwing garbage in the drains," said Thackeray, adding that people throw mattresses, furniture and even thermocol sheets, which do not degenerate, thereby making the situation worse a bigger challenge for the civic body.

'DP should also have enough amenities for city'

Uddhav Thackeray cautioned BMC chief Ajoy Mehta to ensure that the city has enough civic amenities in DP along with increase in FSI. "The threat of global warming is looming on Mumbai and we are doing very little to counter it. The city already has monstrous high-rises but there aren't sufficient civic amenities. Presently, it can handle 25mm rain per hour, but in the future, with more high-rises coming up, it should have the capacity to handle 50mm rain per hour," said Thackeray.

BJP leaders avoid sharing dais with Uddhav

Even as Shiv Sena leaders and party workers are leaving no stone unturned to unleash their wrath on the BJP, and with even BJP leaders avoiding sharing the dais with Uddhav Thackeray, the Sena president on Wednesday lauded its ally's efforts and contribution as an alliance partner. Both Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar and BJP leader in the BMC Manoj Kotak did not attend the function.

Thackeray said the suggestions made by deputy mayor Alka Kerkar were noteworthy. "I appreciate the work done by Sena corporators and also BJP's contribution as an alliance partner," said Uddhav.

However, without naming anyone, Uddhav seemed to take a swipe at the BJP when he said that those who have a habit of finding faults will start picking holes anyway. Earlier during the day, BJP MP Kirit Somaiyya had announced that he would go for 'pothole darshan yatra' in the city.

"Those who will not find water-logging this year will start finding potholes in city. Critics may criticise the shortcomings but should also consider the challenges faced by the civic body and learn to appreciate the good work, which will encourage the staff," said Uddhav.
