'Enlightened' Indrani Mukerjea wants to donate wealth

After having earlier told the special CBI court that she had translated about 700 shlokas of the Gita into English in the hope of publishing them, Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case, on Thursday said she felt "enlightened like Gautam Buddha" after witnessing "pain and grief" in prison.

Meanwhile, the court on Thursday granted Indrani a day's relief to go and perform her father's last rights on December 27.

After the court passed orders on the interim bail application filed by Indrani, she expressed her willingness to speak out before the court. "I want to give away about 75 per cent of the wealth I have earned to a cause. I have some NGOs in mind—one of them being Iskcon—and others that care for women and children, to whom I wish to donate my assets. I don't know what my future holds, but I have received enlightenment. Also, I want to donate my organs after I die, but through proper channels," she said.

Indrani said during the past 15 months in jail, she has witnessed a lot of grief around, and wants to do something to alleviate poverty in the country. "There have been instances when people wait to get arrested to ensure they get a two-course meal. Though I am a British citizen, I would like to stay in India." When questioned as to how her daughter Vidhie would spend the rest of her life, she said, "Vidhie will be taken care of." Indrani added that she would retain the remaining 25 per cent of her assets, but it would be transferred to the same NGOs after death.
