Mumbai University (MU) students who failed in more than five subjects uptil their third year of Bachelor of Engineering (B.E) have got some relief from the Bombay high court, which allowed them to appear for the viva and practical exams of the 7th semester (which is taken in the fourth year), which began on Monday.

Around 900 third year students approached the HC after MU rejected their requests to allow them to appear for their fourth year exams in this academic year itself in accordance with the old syllabus after they clear their ATKT (Allow to keep term) exams, as it was allowed in 2009. An MU ordinance of 2013 made it mandatory for engineering students to appear for their fourth year exams as per the new syllabus. A student Krutika Sakhare, had moved the court against the ordinance on October 13.

Advocate, Nitin Gangal, appearing for the 900 student, said, "The HC granted the students interim relief by allowing them to appear for viva and practical exams. The court was angry that the university did not considered the students' representation. The next hearing is on November 13, when a decision on the theory exam may be given."

Rui Rodrigues, representing MU, said, "The students have got interim relief from HC, but they have to submit the undertaking to the HC that they will not claim any equities of the interim relief granted to them."

Abhijeet Gahilot, one of the affected engineering students from Datta Meghe College of Engineering, said, "We are happy about the decision."

Vaibhav Palav, a student of Armit Engineering college, Asangaon, said, "Now we are hoping that in the next hearing, we get a positive decision on the theory exams too."
