Engineer, three others held in vehicle theft case

Four members of a gang, including a computer engineer, have been arrested by the city crime branch for allegedly running a vehicle theft racket. The engineer was instrumental in breaking the locking system codes of vehicles and equipment for this purpose were imported from Saudi Arabia and Taiwan. The police suspect that the gang was in touch with international vehicles thieves.

Who are the arrested?
Those arrested have been identified as Oshiwara resident Ayubali Shaikh alias Guddu alias Electrician, 38, Mira Road resident Tehzeer Hussain Khan alias Bablu, 38, a driver, Andheri resident Ranjeet Chaudhary, 26, also a driver and Kalachowki resident Nishaant Gunjaal, 32, a computer engineer.

Who was the victim?
According to the police, 50-year-old Wadala resident Paaru Dedia's car, a Chevrolet Spark, was stolen from Matunga on August 18. Dedia, a housewife, searched for her car in the Matunga and Wadala areas and then lodged a complaint of theft with the RAK Marg police on the same day.

Where did equipments come from?
On receipt of specific information, the police apprehended Shaikh, Khan, Chaudhary and Gunjaal for their alleged involvement in Dedia's vehicle theft case.
"Investigation has revealed that Shaikh used to prepare duplicate keys for the other gang members for stealing vehicles. Chaudhary used to provide equipment, including cutters to Khan, so that the latter could steal vehicles. The gang has especially got equipment from Saudi Arabia and Taiwan to steal vehicles. We are yet to seize the equipment. We suspect some of the gang members were in touch with international vehicle thieves," said an officer from Anti-Motor Vehicle Theft Cell of crime branch.

How would they break the lock system?
The gang is suspected to have stolen several vehicles from Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. "The gang used to specifically steal Scorpio, Tavera, Verna and Desire cars. In order to break the lock system code, Gunjaal used a laptop. We are ascertaining how the gang used to function," said the officer.
