Engine jumps red signal on Central Railway, throws services out of kilter

Several trains on the slow and fast line were affected, said officials from CR.

Commuters travelling by Central Railway (CR) has to suffer on Saturday after an engine jumped signal between Vidyavihar and Kurla stations at 1.15 pm, owing to which several services were disrupted by up to 30 minutes.

Several trains on the slow and fast line were affected, said officials from CR. "Around 1.15 pm an engine coming from Kalyan and going towards CSMT jumped a red signal between Vidyavihar and Kurla stations and stopped. Due to this, three other locals were held up," a CR official said.

Railway officials termed the incident SPAD, which is railway parlance for accident. The official said, "An inquiry has been ordered and appropriate steps will be taken."

All services resumed by 1.45 pm, but several commuters were stranded inside trains due to the incident. Other services were either moving slow or had come to a halt for 30 minutes.

Ankit Arora, a Ghatkopar resident, said, "When I reached the station around 2.00 pm, a lot of the crowd was entering the train towards CSMT. I had to skip two trains to board one with some space in it."
