The construction work of a flyover at Panvel got disturbed because of hindrance of old shops and hutments. The work of the flyover in front of KSRTC bus stand has not been completed since the past two-and-a-half-years as slums and shops have occupied the space.

The space near the roadside has been encroached largely which is causing inconvenience to pedestrians as well as vehicles moving on that path. The slum dwellers sit on the roadside and block the path available to pedestrians and vehicles. It becomes all the more difficult as the space is already less. The incomplete bridge has also been acting as an obstacle for widening the road as it is right in the middle of the road.

There are two flyovers on the same route; the work of the 1.4km-long flyover starting from Garden hotel to Takka has been completed while the work of the second one is still incomplete. The narrow road under the bridge is congested which leads to accidents.

Mohan Kulkarni,70, a resident, said, “I have been staying in Panvel since 40 years and have seen the population double. I have observed stagnancy in civil development too.” He added, “The number of accidents has been increasing day by day which causes fear among residents to walk on that road.”

A pedestrian revealed, “I met with an accident once, when I was crossing this road as the path was extremely crowded.”

Another resident said, “When I drive my four-wheeler, I get stuck in a traffic jam as it is crowded and there is no place to move further.” “The encroachment under the bridge has been constant since many years as I am staying here since childhood. In fact, it is increasing rapidly,” said a resident.

The concerned officer was not reachable for any comment.
