Eminent cardiologist Dr BK Goyal dies at 82

Born in 1935, Dr Goyal was the recipient of top awards like Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. His final rites will be conducted on Wednesday at Banganga.

Dr BK Goyal, an eminent cardiology and head of cardiology department at Bombay Hospital, passed away on Tuesday morning following a cardiac arrest, his family and city's medical fraternity said. He was the recipient of top civilian awards like Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

The 82-year-old suffered an attack at his South Mumbai home, said reports. While he was rushed to the Breach Candy Hospital, doctors declared him brought dead. His final rites will be conducted on Wednesday at Banganga. 

A former director-professor of cardiology at state-run JJ Group of hospitals and Grant Medical College, and a chairman of Haffkine Institute, Dr Goyal was also an honorary consultant cardiologist to the Texas Heart Institute at Houston, USA.

Maharashtra Medical Council president Dr Shivkumar Utture said, “I had met him in a lot of meetings. He was a famous doctor at Bombay Hospital. He was not only a good academician but also a good person by heart. It is a great loss to the medical community. He was very active in cardiology society and was one of the main office-bearer of the society.”
