The Election Commission (EC) has announced re-polling in three booths in the city suburbs after a malfunction in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

The booths that will go for re-polling on Sunday are booth number 243 at Charkop, number 242 at Malad (West) and number 160 at Chandivali. The EC has also ordered a repoll in booth number 305 of Shrigonda in Ahmednagar constituency. Voters can exercise their franchise from 7am to 6pm.

As per the EC office, in the first two cases, the error was purely technical as the EVMs registered extra votes on their own. In Charkop, the machines showed two extra votes, whereas in Malad (West), it registered five extra votes.

“We learnt about the fault on the polling day itself, and the EVMs were immediately replaced but the ECI decided to hold re-poll,” said Shekhar Channe, collector, suburbs.

An official enquiry has been ordered in the case of Chandivali polling booth as the EC suspects human involvement. Before the actual polling begins, a mock drill will be carried out in the presence of polling officers and all candidates to check the EVMs.
