The ongoing rumours about the transfer of Thane collector Dr Ashwini Joshi were put to rest by the city's guardian minister today. Eknath Shinde extended full support to officers like Joshi who have been quite pro-active in curbing illegal activities in Thane.

Since Republic Day, rumours about the transfer of Thane's district collector had been making rounds. Despite of being denied by the collectorate, the talks went on, until, Saturday when minister Eknath Shinde's statement offered clarity on Joshi's continuance as a collector in Thane.

"We support Ashwini Joshi and anybody who is taking actions against illegal activities going on in Thane region," said Shinde. He also praised her bravado and courage for being pro-active in bringing these illegal activities under control. Shinde issued this statement at Konkan region's sports competition held by the revenue division at Navi Mumbai's sports association ground at Vashi on Saturday.

Joshi has been active against illegal sand mining and quarrying activities going on in the Thane region. A number of raids against illegal sand miners operating in Thane, Mumbra, Bhiwandi and Kalyan have been conducted under her guidance.

In the past three to six months, the district administration has cracked down on illegal sand miners in the area and confiscated equipments worth above Rs10.87 crores.

Activists like Nandkumar Pawar who have taken up the issue of illegal sand mining in Thane region also vouched for the decrease in this activity. He said, "During my weekly visits to the areas where heavy dredging is done, I have seen a considerable decrease. The trucks carrying illegally mined sands are hardly seen these days. In fact, some of these truckers are scared to venture out on the roads with the sand for they fear being caught."
