This year Eid e Milad un Nabi celebrations were less noisier as compared to last year as per findings by Awaaz Foundation, an NGO that has been spearheading its fights against noise pollution and creating awareness about it.

As per the decibels (dB) recorded, the highest noise level was of 105.2 dB,as compared to 111.5 dB of last year. While this year the highest decibels were close to Dockyard Road, last year the highest figure was close to J J Hospital. The figure, however, was higher than the permissible decibel levels.

In residential areas, the permissible noise level is up to 55 dB before 10 pm and 45 dB after 10 pm. Commercial areas have a permissible level of 65 dB from 6 am to 10 pm and 55 dB from 10 pm to 6 am. At no place was the noise levels within the permissible limits.

“In a number of cases people had loudspeakers mounted on the truck. However, it was a positive sign that noise pollution was less this year,” said Sumaira Abdulali, convenor of Awaaz Foundatiion.

Noise pollution was also due to honking. At Mohammed Ali Road, numerous motorcycles continuously used the their horns measuring upto 95dB, driving recklessly through roads blocked with pedestrian traffic.
