The state school education and sports department on Wednesday issued a circular stating that schools should consider the residential address, provided by guardians of orphan students or by the institutions or orphanages caring for them, as their birth place.

After DNA had reported on October 7, 2016 that orphans and orphanages had raised concerns about the state government education department’s directive to the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) that from next year, in addition to the date of birth, the place of birth of students should also be mentioned on Secondary School Certificates (SSC), After the new rule came in of mentioning birthplace of students in Secondary School Certificates in addition to their birth date, many orphans and orphanage officials had expressed concerns about what the state board would mention in case of orphan students who pass board exams every year.

The birthplace of students are usually mentioned in birth certificates or in leaving certificates. According to the state education department’s government resolution, from next year, the students will get SSC certificates, not just mentioning their date of birth but also their place of birth. This would be helpful in the long-term and the certificate could be submitted for any educational or other documentation-related formalities.

A senior official from the state school education and sports department said, “The state education department has issued a circular stating that in the case of orphan students, the schools can consider the address of such students as provided by their guardians, institutions or orphanages taking care of such children, and there is no harm in mentioning the address as their birthplace on the board exam certificates.”

The changes in board certificates will take place after students appear for their board examinations next year.
