The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education board is still in a bind about whether it should have code numbers printed on question papers for the board exams. Considering the fact that the papers are published in multiple languages, coding them could be quite a laborious task.

The suggestion of coding the papers was given by a three-member committee when the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) Maths paper-I question paper was leaked in March this year, causing an uproar. The committee was formed to conduct an inquiry after a student procured the paper, allegedly with the help of his father, a police officer. The committee then submitted a list of suggestions to the state board.

A senior official from the education board said, "If the state board introduces code numbers on the question papers, if will be easy to find out from which exam centre a paper is leaked. When the Math paper got leaked, it was difficult to track down the centre."

Gangadhar Mhamane, chairman, state board, said, "It was a suggestion made by the committee members. We are still in the process of consideration on whether to start anything such. As for the board printing code numbers on the question papers, it will be a task because the question papers are not printed in just one language, but in seven to eight different languages."
