Even as colleges and coaching institutes deny practicing integrated coaching, parents still say that aspirants are indirectly coaxed into enrolling into colleges that support classes and vice-versa.

Krupa Sane (name changed) a Borivali resident shared her ordeal. “We went to a leading coaching institute to inquire about coaching for JEE and MHT-CET for engineering. We were told that the class timings would be exhaustive and it would only work for us if we seek admission in a particular junior college which supports the coaching class. When we went to the college to formalise our admission, we were given a form to fill stating that our child was studying at the particular coaching institute” said Krupa. She said, ever since then, attending college was no more required for her son who spent the whole day at the class and went to college only for practicals and examinations.

Krupa coughed up Rs 30,000 a year as college fees and close to Rs 3 lakh for the coaching institute. “We were concerned about our son bunking his college but unfortunately most classes gave us no option if we wanted a full-fledged classroom programme” she added.

Leading coaching institutes provide multiple ‘packages’. From distance programmes to full-time classroom programmes, the amount ranges from Rs 2 lakh to 6 lakh for a two-year-long programme for engineering or medicine. “If the child does not do well, the entire money is wasted. Many parents also take loans to ensure that they put their children into a ‘good’ class” said another parent.

The fees charged by big coaching giants are at least 3 times more than that of small classes, says Narendra Bambwani. “They charge anything between Rs 80,000 to Rs 1 lakh for two years with good quality of education. These classes charge huge sums and lure parents with their so called facilities” he added.
