The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is ready with seven environment-friendly crematoriums which will be based on piped natural gas (PNG). Out of the seven, three crematoriums will be commissioned by June end, and the other four will be commissioned by July end. The BMC has a total of 46 crematoriums across the city, of which 11 run on electricity, and the rest on wooden pyres. In its first step, the civic body has planned to start 13 crematoriums to run on PNG, which will be cost effective, and will also save electricity consumption and protect trees and the environment.

The three crematoriums the BMC will commission this month are located in Shivaji Park in Dadar, Dahanukar wadi in Kandivli and Daulat Nagar in Borivli. The four crematoriums which will be commissioned next month are located in Chandan Wadi in Marine Lines, Sion, Oshiwara and Charai. The remaining six PNG crematoriums in Amboli in Andheri, Bhabhai in Borivli, Marve in Malad, Aarey colony in Goregaon, Undarai in Malad, and Versova will take some more time to be ready.

"The PNG crematoriums at Undarai, Marve, Versova and Aarey colony are completely new constructions for PNG crematoriums, for which the tendering process is on. It will take at least two years to be complete. The Oshiwara and Bhabhai crematoriums may be commissioned by the end of this year. Each new crematorium costs around Rs 5 crore", said a civic official.

BMC Executive Health officer Dr Padmaja Keskar said, "The main objective is to have an eco-friendly crematorium. It will save wood and electricity. "

PNG-powered crematoriums instantly heat up to the optimum capacity once switched on and need not be run continuously. This will help reduce running and maintenance costs. Electric pyres, on the other hand, need continuous heating
