DNA had reported on Thursday that in the special inspection drive by Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), of 566 hotels, restaurants, clubs and gymkhanas under the Mumbai Fire Brigade’s scanner, over 90 per cent were found violating fire safety norms. On Thursday, when we visited popular malls in the city to supervise their fire safety measures, we found that they were blatantly breaching norms.

R City Mall, Ghatkopar

In the joint inspection by MFB and BMC last Saturday, three eateries in the mall faced action. They are Macchiato Veg, TGIF on the ground, floor and Indigo Delicatessen. Officials found that Macchiato Veg had erected temporary shed in front of the shop, since the inspection, the shop is shut down. While in other two eateries obstructions were found in the fire escape route. Nayeem Ali, Manager of R City Mall said, “We have rectified all the deficiencies told by the officials”. As per fire safety norms, common passages and escape routes should not be obstructed to enable escape in case of an emergency.

Dominos Pizza, Odean Mall, Ghatkopar

MFB inspection found that the Domino’s Pizza at the mall had stored a large number of LPG cylinders and electrical appliances.

The MFB had issued NOC only for the electrical appliances and seized eight cylinders during their inspection. But manager Raj Pillai said, “Mine is not the only restaurant here and the mall’s management looks after all such issues.”

Phoenix Market City, Kurla

The food court on the second floor of the mall was shut for couple of hours last Sunday. The officials found that in front of 11 restaurants in the food court, common passage was occupied with dining tables and chairs. When DNA visited the mall, all the dining fixtures in the food court was removed entire common area was free which is usually packed with people.
