The Mumbai Metro One conducted a mock drill on the yet-to-be-opened Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar rail corridor, early on Friday, to check the preparedness in a contingency.

A fire alarm was announced on a train midway, between Airport Road and Marol Naka stations, at about 8.30am. The train was stopped immediately and trains following behind were alerted in line with the operation procedure.

Metro staffers, who filled in for commuters on the drill run, were evacuated from the compartments onto the pathway on the viaduct, and guided to the nearest station. There are 12 stations on the 11.4km corridor.

Fire brigade teams, which were called in, used the snorkel ladder to to help commuters come down from the elevated rail line.

A Metro spokesperson said the drill lasted for just six minutes. This is the final test of the joint central disaster management plan.

Now, the authorities are awaiting the inspection report of the Research, Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO), which had conducted its checks on the Metro system a month ago.

After the RDSO submits its report, the department of the Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety would initiate its tests to certify the system for public use.

This could result in the official opening of services overshooting the March deadline. The much-delayed project has also seen a sharp increase in cost from Rs2,356 crore to Rs4,321 crore.
