The DY Patil Hospital and Research Centre in Nerul has come up with a unique solution for the children under medical supervision there. The hospital has set up a classroom for children where expert teachers will teach them while they are getting their medical treatments.

On several occasions, children are admitted to hospitals for medical treatment and the period of their stay ranges anywhere from a week to a month or sometime even more. Parents whose children are in the hospital frequently worry about the education of their children getting affected during their stay in the hospital. Now, though, these parents can rely on the hospital for studies of their children.

Vijay Patil, president of DY Patil group, on Tuesday, started the service, that will enable around 20 such children to receive elementary education. The service has been started in the paediatric department of the hospital, where a television set has been installed where rhymes on different subjects are being played. "We took the initiative after realising parents' concern of their children's education," said Patil, adding he got full support from the officials of the group. The DY Patil group has been running a number of education institutions in the same premises. "We have got expert faculties who will devote their time in the classroom and add more facilities in the days to come," said Patil.

The initiative is Patil's solely, who recently decided to bear the educational expenses of a girl child whose mother suffered severe burn injuries in an acid attack last year and there is no one in the family to look after the education facility of the child. "Since we decided to give educational support to the girl child whose mother is still recuperating in the hospital, we decided to give similar facilities to other children admitted to the hospital for medical treatment," said Dr Shyam More, medical superintendent of DY Patil Hospital.

At present, children will be taught languages, mathematics, social science, music, dance drawing, craft, outdoor games and outdoor activities. The teaching aids that will be used to teach children are pictures, PPT chart, models, audio-visual aids, maps, crayons, paper pencils, toy among others. Additionally, all major festivals and event will be celebrated to expose the children to the art and culture of the country.
