Two men suspected of committing credit card fraud with at least 40 Mumbaikars to the tune of Rs2.2 lakh were arrested this week by the crime branch of the Mumbai police.

Police sources told dna that the two accused, identified as Ratandeep Sood (27) and Sandeep Rajak (23) are graduates, and former call centre employees based in New Delhi.

Police claim that the duo would procure personal details of credit card holders of two private banks, and would call them, pretending to be telecallers from the banks.

"They would call up the credit card customer, and introduce themselves as bank call centre employees. To gain the confidence of the victims, they would give them their full names, dates of birth and other personal details that they had procured from the call centres," said deputy commissioner of police (detection) Dhananjay Kulkarni. He added, "The accused would later ask the victim for his pin number and CVV number by stating that his card has been blocked and they need to unblock it, or for redemption of reward points. The victim, after getting his personal details from the duo, would believe that they were from the bank, and would part with his pin number and CVV number".

The accused duo, with the help of the CVV and the pin number, would make online purchases, mostly of high-end mobile phones, and would later sell them in the grey market, police said. "The duo operated the racket from Rama Road in Moti Nagar, Delhi. From April 2014 to January 2015, they have duped at least 40 people in the city to the tune to Rs 2.2 lakhs," said DCP Kulkarni.

The property cell of the Mumbai crime branch, during its investigation, found that the fraud victims had gotten calls from New Delhi. With this clue, the Mumbai police launched a full-scale investigation in New Delhi, and managed to nab the two accused.
