The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) will finally resume dumping of refuse at the controversial Kanjurmarg ground. The civic body will dispose 500 tonnes of waste initially and will double the capacity later.

The corporation had stopped dumping waste at the site after Vikhroli residents led by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) had staged a symbolic ‘mundan’ protest citing defiance of norms while developing the site.

The Bombay high court (HC), while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by city-based NGO Vanashakti, had in its interim order directed the MCGM to stop dumping waste at the site. The NGO had maintained violation of environmental norms.

Refuting the claims before the HC, which vacated the ban on dumping on November 22, the civic body said it had requisite permissions from Supreme Court and the environment ministry. “We wanted to play safer and ensure the bio-reactor functioned properly to curb stench. So, we took time after the HC vacated the ban. The dumping will begin from Saturday following discussion in this regard at technical advisory committee,” additional municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani said.

The MCGM will have seven bio-reactors to treat leachate (spurious liquid emanating out of landfill site following degradation of refuse) at the yard, each of them slated to saturate in a year’s time. Once matured, the bio-reactor will degrade to its capacity in seven years, making available adequate space for dumping refuse at the site. When fully functional the corporation is supposed to process 4,000 tonnes of waste.

Meanwhile, Adtani added the civic body has erected a chimney to exhaust methane gas produced from the dump yard. The civic body is now looking forward for improving the gas collection system too to convert the same into energy. This will be in addition to the 14 mega watt of power the civic body has already planned to produce through its separate ‘waste-to-energy’ project.
