The Directorate of Technical Education, Maharashtra has initiated an inquiry against HR College, Churchgate for allegedly launching an international MBA course in collaboration with Rutgers Business School, Newark without the mandatory approvals.

A single member committee—a professor of Sydenham Management Institute—has been constituted to look into the case. It has been asked to submit a report in two days.

Prahar, a city-based students union, had complained to DTE that the course with $25,000 as fee, was illegal as it hadn't been approved by any govt agency including AICTE. They alleged that in spite of that the college had advertised the course and admitted students.

A month ago, HR College of Commerce announced a 20-month twinning MBA programme with Rutgers Business School, Newark (US). Under the arrangement, the American business school would deliver the first 16 of the total 18 modules in Mumbai. The last two modules is to be held in New Jersey.

On being asked, principal of the college Indu Shahani said: "We have applied to UGC for approval under the University Grants Commission (Promotion and Maintenance of Standards of Academic Collaboration between Indian and Foreign Educational Institutions) Regulation 2012. We will not start the admission process until the course is approved."

She also said AICTE approval wasn't required as the degree would be offered by Rutgers and not the college, which is just a facilitator. Shahani denied that admission was on.
