At least three apparently intoxicated men molested a woman, then thrashed her husband and father-in-law as they reacted at a restaurant in Nalasopara (East) on Monday night.

The family members were stepping to their table at the Lakeside Bar and Restaurant, near Martin complex, when the men allegedly patted the woman on the rear.

As they walked away, the woman caught one of them and demanded an apology. Her husband also voiced his disapproval. But the men, who have been described as middle-aged, attacked the couple.

According to a complaint by the couple with the Nalasopara police, some other youth also joined the attackers. No one from the restaurant staff or any passerby bothered to help the couple.

"We had booked a table at the restaurant and were going upstairs while some families were still waiting for their turn. Then the three men going down the steps patted me on the rear," the woman said. "I caught hold of one of them and demanded an apology, but they began to abuse us. They also assaulted my husband and my father-in-law when they intervened."

The husband said that the hooligans also snatched his gold chain. "There were at least eight men who attacked me. As I tried to get away they followed me and ripped my shirt," he said.

A senior Nalasopara police officer said they are examining CCTV footage from the area to try and identify the attackers.
