In a bizarre incident, a drunk man allegedly deliberately slapped a 24-year-old woman on her backside outside a popular restaurant in Bandra (W) on Monday night. After the victim screamed for help, people gathered and thrashed the man, before the police came and nabbed him.
The incident occurred at around 10.30pm outside a well-known restaurant-cum-bar in ONGC Colony where the woman and her friends were standing.
According to an eyewitness, the drunk man was standing with his group of seven to eight friends. He saw the woman and passed an indecent comment, which she ignored. It was then that he spanked her.
“When the victim shrieked and turned around, he apologised but started staring at her,” the eyewitness said, adding, “She then screamed for help, after which her friend started beating him up. Soon, people also gathered there and thrashed him.”
The victim’s friend called the police control room and informed them about the incident. A patrolling vehicle of the Bandra police arrived there and nabbed the man.
Her friend, while requesting anonymity, said that it was surprising that something like this happened in a place like Bandra. “The police called the man’s family,” he said, adding, “However, following the family’s request, we didn’t register a complaint.”
Senior inspector Abhay Shashtri of the Bandra police station said, “I am not aware about any such incident occurring in the area but I will check the records to see if action has been taken or not”.
Repeated calls to Shashtri didn’t yield any response. Another police inspector, on condition of anonymity, said, “The incident occurred outside the restaurant and police had brought the person to the police station. But the victim didn’t lodge a complaint against him.”
‘Refused liquor’
The owner of the restaurant, Lakhan Jethani, said, “The man, who is in his mid-thirties, entered with a group of friends and drank heavily here. When they started misbehaving with the other customers and our staff, we stopped serving them drinks and asked them to leave.”
