A female stray dog was beaten to death by the watchman of a society in Vasai (West) after some of the society members complained about the animal.
Uday Kumar Mistry, watchman of Ram Rahim Park in Din Dayal Nagar of Vasai (West), repeatedly thrashed the dog after getting drunk, leading to her death.
Jaykar Kotian, 52, an animal lover and a resident of the building, lodged a complaint with the Manikpur police after the dog died during treatment on the building premises.
“On August 1, my daughter saw the drunk watchman beating the stray. Even though she was bleeding profusely, he didn’t stop and continued hitting her. He then threw the animal out of the building but my daughter brought the dog to our residence and nursed her,” said Kotian.
“When I reached home, I was shocked to find the dog in such a state and immediately took her to a private animal care clinic in Vasai where the vet administered some intra venous (IV) fluids and bandaged the head wound. Since Vasai does not have an animal hospital, the vet advised me to take her home and pray for her recovery as the injuries were serious,” said Kotian.
“I took her back home. However, on August 2 morning, she vomited blood and breathed her last. She was a year old and our family members would feed her daily and also take care of her medical needs. The dog was very friendly but did not allow strangers into our society and thus the building was secure,” said Kotian.
“We have registered a case under section 428 (mischief by killing or maiming an animal) of the Indian Penal Code against the absconding watchman. We have sent the carcass for post-mortem. We have also seized the wooden stick with which he had clobbered the dog and have sent the stick for forensic examination,” said Hegaje, inspector, Manickpur police station.
“A manhunt has been launched for Mistry. We are questioning the security agency owner in Vasai through whom the watchman was hired.”
