A 35-year-old estate agent died after allegedly falling off the balcony of a building in Versova on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Nitin David Nair, a resident of New MHADA Colony near Lokhandwala circle in Andheri (W), who worked as an estate agent from Andheri itself.

According to the police, Nair was addicted to alcohol and used to drink heavily on occasion. "Nair used to drink almost every night and, at times, it was difficult to control him. On Sunday, at 10.30pm, he went up to the eighth floor of the building and began to drink alcohol. Since he was heavily inebriated, he accidentally slipped over the balcony's railing and fell from the eighth floor, dying on the spot," said an officer from Versova police station.

The building's security guard found the body and Nair was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead, the officer added.

A case of accidental death was then registered at the Versova police station.

"The deceased must have been drinking near the balcony railing or while sitting on it, due to which the danger of him falling was increased. Till now, we haven't found any evidence which shows that he was drinking due to depression or committed suicide. It's an accident that resulted in Nair sustaining critical head injuries and multiple fractures. So far, we have recorded the statements of Nair's uncle and a friend of his," said assistant police inspector Revansinh Jhingale.
