Arrest of a Columbian national by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officials with six kilograms of cocaine worth Rs 36 crore revealed to NCB about the operations of the syndicates operating from Latin American countries. As per the arrested foreign national, the handlers from abroad now give couriers a 'cooling period' and send them 'indicators' to ascertain if the couriers are being tailed or not.

Recently, the NCB officials had arrested Freedy Trujillo Renteria, 32, a Columbian national who was receiving commercial pilot training with cocaine.

"Renteria, who worked as courier for the Columbian drug syndicate, revealed that the couriers are only told that they have to handover the consignment to someone. Their flight expenses are taken care of,
good remuneration is paid to them, and they are lured with free trips to India. The hotels in which couriers are made to stay are lesser known ones which are booked over the internet and addresses are given to couriers only when they land at the airport," said an NCB official.

He added that couriers are strictly warned not to book any cab aggregators so that their contact details do not get registered anywhere in order to leave minimum trail. "They hire cabs on the spot from the airport to hotels. Unlike seen in earlier cases, the couriers are now given a cooling period of four to five days. After reaching the hotel, the courier is asked by the handler to visit a few places in the city and send photographs of the places visited. Once the handler is satisfied that the courier is not being tailed, he contacts the India based receiver asking him to get his consignment picked up after exchanging the codes from the courier," the official said.

Renteria was in touch with his Columbia based handler identified only as 'Diamond' via WhatsApp & Skype calling.
