To ensure that drink-driving accidents do not mar celebrations on New Year's eve, the traffic police have issued stern guidelines to establishments serving liquor. As per the guidelines, hotels serving liquor will have to arrange vehicles for drunk customers or drop them home if they do not have driver or anyone else to drive them home. The police will take action against establishments if their customers are caught drink-driving.

City traffic police have also written to bars and hotels serving liquor, asking them not to serve liquor to minors and people without valid liquor permit.

"If a customer is drunk and has not brought along a driver for his vehicle, s/he should be asked to arrange for a driver, or the establishment's driver or vehicle should take him/her home. If there is the possibility of an untoward incident, the nearest police station or traffic chowky should be informed," says the letter.

Hotels/bars have also been asked not to allow their customers to park vehicles illegally. There shouldn't be angular/double parking. Hotels should also ensure that roads leading to their establishments remain free for other vehicles to ply, or else legal action will be taken.

Wine shops have been told to inform traffic police if they find their customers consuming liquor on road, "Action will be taken against establishments if their customers are caught drink-driving. Hotel and bars where liquor is served should put up boards saying 'Don't Drink & Drive'," the letter concludes.

Over a 1,00 traffic personnel will be deployed across the city on New Year's eve. BK Upadhyay, joint commissioner of police (traffic), said: "Our focus will be on checking drink-driving, over-speeding and riding without helmet. We will have over 70 nakabandis of which 25 will be new. We will also seek help from local police for additional manpower, and enhance checking via CCTVs."

The drive will be in full force between 10pm and 5am, said an official, who added that all checkpoints will have cops with speedometers and breath analysers. Their areas of focus will be Juhu beach, Marine Drive, Gateway, Carter Road, Versova beach, etc.

As part of the special drive on drink-driving, over 320 motorists have been caught since December 24.

Traffic from Juhu Road to VM Road junction will have one-way restrictions as well. That apart, entry will be closed to west-bound traffic commuting on VM Road towards Juhu chowpatty.
