A slight drizzle during the day along with cloudy skies and breeze gave the city a much-needed breather from the heat on Saturday. The maximum temperature dipped from the seven-year-high of 37.2 to 35.7 degree Celsius. The minimum temperature stood at 25 degree Celsius.

"This happened because of a depression in the Arabian Sea. The depression resulted in clouding particularly in the Konkan and Goa belt. It is due to this clouding that parts of the city were cloudy too," said V K Rajeev, director, Indian Meterological Department (IMD).

The climate is expected to be the same today and on Monday too. "As of now there are cyclonic winds and they are causing this change in weather. These are 1,400 kms inside the sea. But the moisture has spread to the interiors of the state and adjacent states too," said K S Hosalikar, deputy director IMD.

"The depression in the sea will move towards the north westerly direction after that," added Rajeev. As per the weather bureau, skies will be generally cloudy for 48 hours. There will be rains and thunder shower too. "Since the moisture incursion has moved inside, it may cause showers on Sunday and Monday too. The dip in temperatures can be considered as a Diwali gift. In any case after the two days break the temperature is likely to rise," added Hosalikar.

The maximum temperature is expected to fall by almost five per cent. While the maximum temperature will be 32 degrees, the minimum will be around 24 degrees Celsius. Dr Prati Samdhani, physician Jaslok Hospital said, "People with co-morbid factors and having history of respiratory illness should be more careful. This is a perfect weather for viruses to flourish."

"The fluctuating temperatures in the last fortnight have already resulted in several cases coming in with people complaining of common cold and viral fever. This drizzle will only increase viral cases during the next couple of days," said Dr Manan Mehta, a general practitioner.
